The Go Diaper Free Podcast

Maybe this has happened to you: you’ve been doing just the morning pee or just poops and feeling pretty good about part-time EC, but now your situation has changed, or your energy has picked back up, or you’re just tired of using diapers anymore...how do you move from part-time elimination communication to full-time ECing?

What, exactly, is the next step in potty training our infants and moving towards being truly “diaper-free?”

One of our readers asked this question, so today I’m gonna give it a full answer.

Is praising during potty training good or bad? Should we praise our babies when they use the potty while doing elimination communication? This is a great question and one that I feel fairly strongly about...and I’ll answer whether you should praise your baby (with stickers or M&M’s or good job’s) while doing EC or potty training (or not).

If you're like me, the moment you started practicing EC, those onesie snaps became one of your biggest headaches, right? I mean, snapping and unsnapping every couple hours….no big deal. But every 30 minutes?!?! Forget it. And so…the snaps were left hanging unsnapped, they were snapped to the side, sometimes snapped over the shoulders. Snapped everywhere except where they were meant to be snapped.

Add in cloth diapers and Tiny Trainers, and you really get tired of those onesies! There's a practical solution to this difficulty - turn your onesies into t-shirts! The pattern I'm going to share with you today is SO easy - anyone can do it, even if the only sewing tools you own are a needle and some thread.

Many people say “I can’t start EC because I am too busy. This baby pottying business is NOT for busy moms.” But I say, “Baloney!” I have 5 kids spanning 8 years and run two businesses...busy is my middle name, and I’ve pottied all 5 of my babies from birth. Not to brag, but I’m definitely fully qualified to share some tips about how to start EC when you’re super-duper busy in today’s show. Whether you’re traveling or too busy to focus on starting elimination communication with your baby, this episode is for you!

Elimination Communication often puzzles new parents because it doesn’t fit in with what we have heard or seen about parenting. In our culture, babies wear diapers. They wear diapers all day long, all night long. Babies have a diaper on their butt practically from the moment they are born until they are “ready” to potty train, usually around age 3.

To understand why EC works, we need to forget everything we heard about full-time diapering and delayed potty training for a second. If we change our paradigm for a moment, we can see that EC actually makes a lot of sense. Let’s look at 4 reasons this is true.

Today’s show is a guest post I’m sharing from Ariane Blais-Lacombe, our certified coach serving Quebec, Canada. Enjoy and please join us over at the full show notes, and add your comments or questions, here: https://godiaperfree.com/117

Placing the potty in each room, potty here/there/everywhere... how does pottying your baby in multiple locations affect elimination communication, and should we be pottying our babies in the same place every time? Super confusing! Today I’m going to answer that specific question from one of our community members.

PS - in the written version of today’s post (godiaperfree.com/116), we’ve included a little gallery of some of our readers’ potty stations.

Working from home adds an extra challenge to the already-demanding task of caring for a baby. Or is it the other way around? Caring for a baby (or toddler) can make work extra challenging. I would argue that practicing Elimination Communication can actually make your working and caretaking struggles easier. Here’s how - in a guest post by one of our certified coaches, Natalie Robbins.

Today I’m sharing the answer to one of our readers’ questions: “How do you recommend keeping a young baby warm when starting EC in a cold winter climate? My baby is now 11 weeks old, and I use cloth diapers with her and cue her when she goes in them these days. I’ve been using baby legs and socks on her feet, but that still leaves an exposed area between the thighs and diaper, which makes her cold in my chilly home.” I’ll share the answer to this and more in today’s episode!

A lot of people who teach potty training say, "Don't leave the potty out. It's not something to be played with." But when we're doing Elimination Communication with babies ages 0 to 18 months, everything is played with. Everything is put in their mouth. Everything is handled, explored, through all of the senses, all the time. Today we’ll discuss whether it’s ok for babies to play with the potty or seat reducer, and how we can use this as a signal that they may need to go. We’ll also cover setting boundaries and what to do if the playing never becomes productive!

I’ll share why babies sometimes resist pottying, why the Terrible Twos exist in toddlers in the first place, and what you can do about it. Like, today. ;)

Today’s episode is about stealth pooping - and what to do about it! It is a guest post from our certified coach Samantha in California who proposes 4 strategies to get good at catching poops when your baby gives no advance signals. “One of the ‘easy’ catches, as taught by Andrea, has never been an easy catch for us, and that is poop. My son is now 14 months old and I am now finally coming to terms with the fact that I have a stealth pooper.” Enjoy the very practical advice Samantha gives us for those babies who poop without warning, and how you can make your elimination communication practice THAT much better when you master this challenge, once and for all.

Today I simplify + share the astounding results of Nuria’s study of over 1,000 ECing mothers from around the world...including the average age of EC completion and the profound positive impact of starting potty training in the first year of baby’s life. Today I’m sharing a guest post from our certified coach, Maru, in London. “The one thing that remains a constant from the day our babies are born is nappies (diapers). The mental hurdle of ditching nappies is huge (for parents mostly, but also for toddlers). I’m going to share a tip that, from my experience, has made the whole thing a lot easier to grasp:  potty training is not that different from getting kids to brush their teeth. If we treat it this way, we’ll feel less daunted, more confident in our parenting, and more committed to getting it done as soon as possible.”

Listen to today’s show to find some helpful tips (and anytime she mentions toothbrushing, swap it for potty training).

When starting elimination communication with your baby, you probably have a bazillion questions, like: How often will my baby need to pee? When can I expect my baby to be potty independent? I’ve heard about potty pauses - when can I expect my baby to resist the potty?

And that last question, my friends, is what we’re going to address today.

But, I’m not going to guesstimate when your baby might resist the potty. I’m going to share with you the actual results I’ve gathered from surveying 855 people from our community who’ve done EC with their babies. I’ll also share why the resistance happens, and what to do about it.

If you don’t want to use diapers at night, want your child potty trained at night, but keep having accidents (or, in elimination communication lingo, “misses”)...look no further. The “dream pee” might just solve your nighttime woes.

Across my own 5 babies, I found that a strategically placed dream pee helped them stay dry at night, and sleep better, during certain times of their baby and toddler years.

In today’s show, I’ll share what a dream pee is, whether you should do them, how to prepare your space, how to do the dream pee, and what to do if you hit trouble. By the end of the show you’ll see how a dream pee can help your nighttime dryness goals for your 12 month plus baby or toddler. And if you have a baby 0-12 months, you will see what’s coming next, and the difference between a dream pee and baby-led nighttime EC.

Today we’re going to talk about the lessons I’ve learned from one of my favorite books, Simplicity Parenting by Kim John Payne, and how his advice can create a slower, more meaningful foundation to your elimination communication practice with that sweet lil baby.

When I had my first child, Kim’s book had just been published. I ate it right up! The book shared all the things I needed to hear at that time to create the family rhythms, calm space, and focused connection that I knew in my heart I wanted, but didn’t quite know how to build. It also helped me keep the brand new, newly released iPhone out of my hands and my focus on my newborn baby. It helped me push back against the “toy creep” that has threatened our family for almost 10 years. Man, I owe Kim a giant thank you for writing this book.

And I was thinking about it the other day, how this book informed my journey as a new mama, and wanted to share those secrets with you today...especially how they relate to infant pottying.

The subtitle of this book is “using the extraordinary power of less to raise calmer, happier, and more secure kids.” If that’s what you want, let’s dive in!

Today I’m going to begin sharing some stories about how a few groups of indigenous peoples around the world, in today’s world to be specific, potty their babies and do not use diapers. Today we are going to start with some of the indigenous peoples of Africa. I get asked this question all the time: do people do “elimination communication” in indigenous communities, or is it altogether something different? We’ll discuss that first on today’s show.

I feel ridiculously passionate about sharing tools with you and your friends during these really strange times. One more little extra podcast/written article for ya to round out our week.

(The first was how to refresh or start EC with observation time, second was wipes alternatives, third was diaper alternatives.)

Kate is our certified coach in Wyoming and she just wrote an amazing and short post on potty training during this time - whether from scratch or to wrap up EC. She wrote it and then I read it for a bonus episode on the podcast...for today, right now!

NOTE: If you’re listening far later than the coronavirus pandemic, and you have 3-7 days off from work and want to potty train, this one is also for you. ;)

We have another bonus episode right now where we’ll discuss disposable diaper alternatives - which can be applied to the current coronavirus self-isolation situation OR any time in the future when diapers might be sparse...OR if you are ready to stop using and throwing away so many darn non-biodegradable diapers!

Right now, families are discovering shortages of disposable baby care items like baby wipes, which can feel scary if that is the product that your family is most accustomed to using. We can help with some strategies, using household items you may already have (or even none at all… read on!). Here are some disposable diaper alternatives.

Today we have a bonus episode by one of our Certified Coaches, Ariane Blais-Lacombe, for those of you self-isolating due to coronavirus (or for ANYONE who wants to get better at EC) who now have some spare time (30-60 minutes) on their hands. Naked observation time is crucial to beginning your EC journey. Letting your baby be naked and watching him without pottying him yet will provide you tons of useful information to know your baby better and potty him or her more accurately. I’ll share Ariane’s 10 Golden Rules for Observation Time, learning when to potty baby, and how to read your baby with the information learned during observation time.

In this episode I’ll give you the elevator pitch for Elimination Communication - or how to talk about pottying your baby without seeming judgy or crazy.

Today’s show is sponsored by my free masterclass about how to bring EC to your town with confidence and structure - “How to make money (and change the world) telling others about EC - My 3-step method.” In it, you’ll discover my simple method (and my very special secrets) to bring EC to your town, make money, and gosh-darnit, change the world...doing what you're already doing, anyway. Save your seat at godiaperfree.com/coachclass.

So, I’ve definitely talked about how to tell others about EC before, but, while researching my upcoming signature EC courses, I’ve gotten a bunch of requests for an even MORE abbreviated version of how to talk about elimination communication without getting the stink-eye, or worse yet, shunned by other parents.

Today I’ll give you a few concise options, followed by my biggest tip on how to bring an awareness of EC to YOUR town...especially if you don’t know a single other soul who does it.

If I had a dollar for how many moms didn’t start elimination communication because they had to return to work, use a daycare, and didn’t think it would be worth the effort...man, I’d have a bunch of dollars! You see, I am convinced that with the right story in your mind, you too will realize that you CAN do EC super-part-time, use a daycare, and still have early potty independence. You can have it all. And we are going to use Andrea’s example to prove it, once and for all.

I’ll also share some advice from two moms of twins who’ve successfully done elimination communication with their babies, one of whom has wrapped up EC by potty training her twins, to boot. What did they do to make ECing twins work? *Even if you don’t have twins, I think you’ll find today’s episode inspiring...and maybe even get an idea or two for your own home! Because, if you have twins, you have to be organized. We can all learn from these mamas.

I say, “no.”

Today I’ll go through 10 easy steps to make sure you’re doing this baby + toddler + potty time thing correctly.

Today I’m going to share why we’re taking Twyla out of diapers at 13 months old, what we’ve been doing, step by step, our challenges and solutions, and what we plan to do, very next.
